Axes is pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with AEC to act as their agent for all AEC products in the UK . AEC is based in Kanagawa , Japan and having been established in 1963 claims to be the oldest manufacturer of eddy current gap sensors in the world. AEC have very extensive experience in the use of eddy current sensors to monitor the gap clearance in automotive and industrial situations . They are able to provide bespoke solutions to solve intractable problems in most automotive research such as piston ring, cam gear and pintle displacement monitoring.
Apart from gap monitoring , the eddy current measurement method is commonly used for the monitoring of turbocharger speed by detection of the compressor blade as it passes the sensor. AEC’s range of sensors and electronics provides a compact and reliable solution to turbochager speed measurement in both volume and high volume automotive applications . Suitable sensors are available for entire range of turbocharger sizes from automotive through industrial to marine applications. AEC’s smallest sensors have active diameter of less than 3mm and are available in M3 thread making it possible to install them into the smallest of compressor housings.
This new relationship now makes it possible for Axes to provide customers with powerful gap monitoring and turbo-charger speed monitoring systems solutions having extended operating temperature ranges.
. Turbocharger bearing displacement monitoring kits.
The package of sensor and electronics provide a high level of performance at a competitive price . It is also one of the most compact offirings on the market.
Over the last 3 years , Axes has successfully applied the compact AEC gap sensors in our own turbo machinery projects as well as supplying them to a number of UK customers who have been happy enough to place repeat orders.
The units , intended for use in turbochargers and high speed PM motors , provide a voltage output proportional to the gap between the sensor and the shaft/target over the range 0 to 0.5 mm with a bandwidth of 30kHz . Axes provides a Displacement sensor package AD-EDS-01 specifically intended for use with these small turbo-machines. This unit provides um resolution and is compact enough to be mounted in the casing of turbochargers and small electric machines. Its high bandwidth ensures accurate positional data even with very high speed machines. Axes and our customers have successfully used this device to monitor the position of shafts, bearings and , squeeze film damper sleeves .

Real time gap monitoring EDS-01
Each gap monitoring system produces a real time voltage equivalent to the gap between the sensor tip and the target and can measure the position of a shaft , bearing outer race, bearing sleeve or other component in either a radial or axial direction. It is also possible , with two devices , to measure displacement of the target in two planes simultaneously.

Peak Run out / displacement monitoring and protection SCM-01
By adding the SCM-01 to the EDS-01 a voltage proportional to the total run-out (or cyclic displacement / whirl amplitude) becomes available in addition to the instantaneous gap signal. This output signal will not change rapidly at a given speed so may be usefully monitored at relatively low rates (typically 10Hz ) . The SCM therefore avoids the need for complex signal processing of the raw displacement signal which must operate at typically 100kHz with high speed machines.
The SCM includes internal frequency filters matched to the operating speed of the target machine so as to ensure that the first order displacement signal is used to determine the peak value. These filter options may be specified by the customer as required.
The AD-SCM-01 also features an adjustable trip which can be set to promptly shutdown a machine should the shaft displacement exceeds a pre-set value . An operations manual for a module suited to a 125krpm application is available for download at the end of this page.
